Mouth Guards

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are designed to protect your teeth from injury. They are routinely used by athletes while playing sports but are also used to protect braces, dental bridges, and to prevent teeth grinding while sleeping. There are several different types of mouth guards that vary in design. Sports mouth guards are composed of much thicker material, designed to protect injury from impact, whereas other mouth guards are thinner and more pliable for comfort.

There are a variety of over-the-counter mouth guards available, but the mass-produced versions will always fall short in comparison to a custom-fit mouth guard provided by our office, which will provide quality protection and comfort.

There are three main types of mouth guards available for purchase:

  • Stock or Pre-made: These are typically bulky and made from foam that fits poorly and makes breathing difficult. This version is inexpensive but serves very little purpose.
  • Boil and Bite: The boil and bite mouth guards are a step above the stock or pre-made versions but lack comfort. The material is submerged in boiling water to soften and then inserted into the mouth and bitten on to conform to your individual bite. However, the initial size is based on standard width and length and rarely fits correctly.
  • Custom-fitted: Your dentist who will take an impression of your teeth to create the best possible fit custom-fitted mouth guard. When being custom-fit for a mouth guard, your dentist will also know the best materials and thicknesses to use based on the use of the mouth guard.

The custom-fitted mouth guard process does not require much time at the dentist office and it also offers the most protection for your teeth and smile. Your teeth are meant to last you a lifetime, so do everything possible to protect them.
